What Happens Before a Design Ever Makes It to the Shop

What Happens Before a Design Ever Makes It to the Shop

If you've ever browsed the Rosewood & Sage shop, chances are you've seen a tumbler, shirt, or design and thought, "That's beautiful."

What you don't see is everything that happened before that product ever made it to the website.

The idea.

The inspiration.

The redesigns.

The moments of uncertainty.

And sometimes, the designs that never make it to the finish line at all.

As a small business owner, creating products is rarely a straight line from idea to launch. Every collection begins with a story, a feeling, or something I simply can't stop thinking about.

Finding Inspiration in Everyday Life

One of the questions I get asked most often is where I find inspiration.

The truth is, it's usually hiding in plain sight.

Sometimes it's a walk around Lake Morton watching the swans glide across the water. Other times it's a beautiful sunset, a blooming flower in my garden, a weekend road trip, or even a conversation with a friend.

I've learned that inspiration often shows up when we're paying attention to the little things.

The Local Roots Collection is a great example of that. The swans, lakes, citrus blossoms, and historic charm of Lakeland all became pieces of a collection because they represent a place that means so much to me.

When an Idea Becomes Something More

Sometimes a design starts with an image.

Other times it begins with a feeling.

One collection I worked on nearly a year ago is called Phases.

The idea started with the moon and its different phases, but the deeper meaning came from realizing how much those phases mirror our own lives.

We're all constantly changing, growing, beginning new chapters, and learning lessons along the way. Some seasons feel full and bright. Others feel quieter, slower, and more reflective.

Just like the moon, we aren't meant to stay in one phase forever.

It's still a work in progress because I haven't quite created the designs exactly the way I envision them yet. And honestly, I think that's part of the creative process too. Sometimes ideas need a little more time to grow before they're ready to be shared.

Those are the kinds of stories I hope to tell through my designs.

The Editing Process No One Talks About

What most people don't realize is that the first version of a design is rarely the final version.

Colors change.

Elements get moved around.

Entire concepts get scrapped.

Sometimes I spend more time deciding what doesn't work than what does.

I've created plenty of designs that never made it into the shop. Not because they were bad, but because they didn't feel like Rosewood & Sage.

Learning to trust that instinct has become one of the most valuable parts of the creative process.

Bringing It All Together

Once a design is finalized, there's still plenty of work ahead.

Creating mockups.

Writing descriptions.

Planning social media posts.

Organizing collections.

Building product listings.

It's funny because sometimes creating the design is actually the quickest part of the process.

But I genuinely enjoy every step because each one brings an idea closer to becoming something meaningful for someone else.

Why I Love the Creative Journey

So much of running a small business happens behind the scenes, and honestly, that's where some of the magic lives.

It's in the brainstorming sessions, the half-finished ideas, the unexpected inspiration, and the moments when a collection suddenly comes together.

Every product in the shop started as a simple idea.

And my hope is that when someone finds a design they love, they're not just purchasing a product. They're connecting with a story.

Thank you for following along and supporting Rosewood & Sage. I'm grateful you're here, and I can't wait to share the next chapter with you.

Until next time,

Brittany
